Kimberley Wahamaa-Deschenes is a breast cancer survivor, advocate, and the founder of the "Trust Your Bust" initiative, which she established to raise awareness about early breast cancer detection. Diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer at 47, she underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatments at the Shirley and Jim Fielding Northeast Cancer Centre.
Inspired by her experience, Kimberley dedicated the following decade to supporting cancer patients through fundraising and awareness efforts. She organized events and shared her story to promote breast cancer screening and early detection. Over ten years, she raised over $18,000 for cancer research and patient support .
In October 2024, Kimberley testified before the House of Commons Standing Committee on the Status of Women, advocating for breast cancer screening for women aged 40 and over. During her testimony, she shared her personal journey, emphasizing the importance of early detection and the need for accessible screening options for younger women.
To commemorate her 10th anniversary as a breast cancer survivor, Kimberley donated a "Bench of Hope" to the Coniston Healing Garden in Sudbury. This bench serves as a symbol of her journey and impact on the community.
In partnership with Eastlink Community TV, a Trust Your Bust mini-series will be airing this October 2025, featuring 4 breast cancer survivors under the age of 50. Stay tuned.
Kimberley's efforts continue to inspire and support those affected by breast cancer, highlighting the significance of early detection and community involvement in the fight against the disease.
